“We are introducing a fundamental shift in news consumption,” said Kabushenga, adding that the audiences want to engage the media houses. “People want to consume the news as it happens. They want to be part of history.”

TECHNOLOGY   A NEW VISION

"Eneke the bird says that since men have learned to shoot without missing, he has learned to fly without perching." This famous quote by Chinua Achebe has inspired Vision Group to follow its audiences that have migrated to digital platforms.

According to Paul Ikanza, the IT Manager at Vision Group, advances in technology have empowered audiences to consume the news when and where they need it.

He notes that audience behaviour has changed over time and people have moved to digital platforms.

"Specifically, today, we are launching something called Augmented Reality (AR). It will be an interface between our print and digital readers and hope to get some of these people across the other side. It will also help with the market for the NewVision paper," Ikanza said.

What is Augmented Reality (AR)?

Well, according to Google, Augmented reality overlays digital content and information onto the physical world — as if they're there with you, in your own space. AR opens up new ways for your devices to be helpful throughout your day by letting you experience digital content in the same way you experience the world.

"It is an evolving journey and we are going to keep going. We are going to keep improving the product. We would like to have a big footprint on the digital space. We have brought a product that will help us engage with you better so that we may have more relevancy in terms of your consumption," Ikanza said.

He added that Vision Group has put a lot of emphasis on analytics because it is the key. "We need to know who is consuming our content. We want people to consume what they want."

Ikanza revealed that the app developers had done over 12 updates. "It is a journey; you keep improving as you go along and this helps us grow as we learn new possibilities."

The latest feature to be added on the app is radio streaming for Bukedde and Xfm. "We shall be releasing streaming for TV in a very short run. We are working on a number of features," Ikanza stated

The Managing Director of Vision Group (MD), Robert Kabushenga launched the digital platform on Monday at Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala. This, according to Kabushenga has turned round the consumption of news.

Kabushenga said the content on the new digital platforms will include texts, photographs and videos. He also pointed out that the audiences will also have a chance to give their opinion or comment.

"We are introducing a fundamental shift in news consumption," said Kabushenga, adding that the audiences want to engage the media houses. "People want to consume the news as it happens. They want to be part of history."

The MD said the changes started with the e-paper, which has extra material than the New Vision (print). He said the e-paper was the first step in 2015.

He said Vision Group has redesigned New Vision and that the Group is moving into the future.
