Missing student's body found in River Rwizi

Investigations have commenced to ascertain what caused Nasur Hamidu's death.

The body of Nasur Hamidu, 19, a student of Kojja Secondary School in Mukono district and resident of Amuru district on Thursday found floating on River Rwizi in Mbarara City on Thursday.

Rashid Ibrahim a student of Moyo Town Secondary School who travelled with Hamidu to Mbarara to look for jobs, said they had spent three days in the district and they have been staying in Katete Ward in Nyamitanga.

Ibrahim said that they had completed Senior Four but due to the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown that has kept schools closed, they decided to head to Mbarara to look for jobs which they were yet to get.

"We came last weekend and we had spent only three days and decided to stay together. On Monday evening, Nasur did not come back home and this left me worried. I tried to look for him and failed to find him and when I tried to call his phone, it was off. I called my mother in Amuru and told her about how Nasur had disappeared," narrated Ibrahim.

He added that as they were searching for Hamidu on Thursday, they were informed that there was an unidentified body floating on River Rwizi.

"I went there and found out that it was Nasur and we called the Police which came and picked the body," Ibrahim said.

Samson Kasasira the Rwizi Region Police spokesperson said that the Police was able to pick the body and take it to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary as they made efforts to trace the relatives of the deceased.

Kasasira said investigations have commenced to ascertain what caused Hamidu's death.
