KAMPALA - The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party president, Maj Gen Gregory Mugisha Muntu, has condemned the act of demolishing St. Peter's Church in Ndeeba, in Rubaga division.

On Monday, residents of Ndeebe woke up to a shock when they found their 40-year old church razed by unknown people.

This raised public attention leading to the arrest of four police officers and seven others on the directives of President Yoweri Museveni.

The act was also condemned by the Archbishop of Church of Uganda, Steven Kazimba Mugalu, saying it was barbaric.

Addressing journalists at the party offices in Kampala, Muntu said the act showed level of impunity in the country.

"This shows the level to which those who commit crime think there is impunity and can do anything and get away with it," he said.

Muntu stressed that this should be worrying all those who want sanity in the country.

"We need to understand that we are in a very difficult situation. There is nothing dangerous in the country as having a sense of impunity by those who control weapons and those who think because their money and wealth, can literally do anything," he added.

He noted that Uganda is likely to face the same situation which other countries without impunity are facing if the duty bearers do not act first.

He called on religious leaders and other authorities at various levels to speak out and condemn such acts of injustice and impunity.

"We call upon those who represent God on earth at different levels of authorities that they are to speak out against injustices. They should get out of what is making them keep quiet to the extent that there silence is making a lot of noise all over," Muntu added.

He said those who hold positions of responsibility in churches and mosques like pastors, sheikhs, bishops and Imams should take on their obligations as shepherds to look after their ‘sheep' who are their followers.

"When injustices happen, when impunity grows to where it has now reached a level where there are razing churches; tomorrow it will be mosques and that can happen to any prayer house.

That is why leaders must start speaking out and condemn these acts," Muntu stressed, adding that those who represent God must realign themselves.
