Tumukunde assembles campaign team

Former security minister Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde is set  to unveil his campaign team ahead of the 2021 general election in form of a pressure group dubbed ‘Kisoboka' loosely translated as ‘it is possible'.

Sources have told New Vision that the ex-spy, who recently declared intentions to run for president, settled to run as an independent contender for the country's top job after talks with founders of People's Progressive Party (PPP) to front him as a presidential flag-bearer collapsed.

People inside Tumukunde's camp have also told New Vision that when he launches of his new political umbrella, the ex-intelligence chief, is likely to unveil a number of lawmakers, including Tororo North MP Annet Nyakecho, outspoken Nakaseke South lawmaker, Luttamaguzi Semakula and former Kabarole Woman MP Beatrice Kiraso, who sources say, will be the main technocrat of the campaign, a role that is akin to that of party secretary general.
A prominent journalist will also be unveiled as the spokesperson of Tumukunde's campaign team. Tumukunde confi rmed the development yesterday, saying that he has decided to launch his campaign team and an umbrella formation in  order to enhance his position as various opposition actors engage in talks concerning the possibility of fi elding a single presidential candidate.
"We shall have a minilaunch, and we shall unveil regional representatives, among other people that we are going to work with. Thereafter, we shall unveil our roadmap and manifesto. However, we are still doing what we can to ensure that we can front a united Opposition," he said.  
TALKS WITH PPP
Asked about the collapse of talks with PPP, a party founded by veteran politician Jaberi Bidandi Ssali, the former security minister said: "We have been trying to work with others to ensure that we can have a joint opposition candidate. However, for now, I have decided to first sort out my house, and then work or co-operate with others."
Tumukunde added that his Kisoboka pressure group is an operational platform that will act as a launchpad for his presidential campaigns. "But, we are still open to working with others in search of a joint opposition," Tumukunde he added.
