The party, however, wants other political parties to front a joint presidential candidate to defeat the incumbent

The Democratic Party (DP) has expressed concern over the rising cases of coronavirus infections and deaths in the country saying elections should be postponed.

Addressing journalists at the party's headquarters at City House in Kampala, press secretary Fred Mwesigwa said more people will die if the 2021 general elections are held under the current circumstances.

He urged the Electoral Commission to postpone the elections as it has happened in other countries of the world.

So far, Uganda has registered nine deaths, and over 1000 cases confirmed.

He however said the DP won't boycott elections if the Electoral Commission doesn't postpone elections in 2021.

Mwesigwa called upon party members who want to contest for LC5 chairmanship to pick nominations forms at the party headquarters next week.

He told journalists that the party will pay nomination fees for aspirants contesting under the DP ticket.

Mwesigwa who was flanked by Nakaseke woman chairperson Violet Nakalema, Matthias Mulumba an aspirant for Kawempe division MP, and Enoch Opio the national publicity secretary, called other political parties to front one joint presidential candidate to defeat President Yoweri Museveni in the next elections.
