Govt cannot intervene in landlord-tenant rent discussions - Nankabirwa

GOVERNMENT chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa has confirmed that government cannot stop landlords from demanding rent arears for the months traders have spent in the lockdown.

This is after the Kampala Central MP Mohammad Nsereko told parliament that landlords in Kampala have locked shops demanding for rent arears contrary to the president's directive which restrained them from evicting tenants.

Nankabirwa in response informed parliament that the president cannot stop landlords from demanding their money instead government can organise soft loans for traders to pay the arrears.

Meanwhile, schools under their association national private schools' association are opposed to de-registration of centre numbers for schools which misappropriate students' examination fees as proposed in the Uganda National Examinations Board Amendment Bill 2020.

The vice chairperson of the Association Hasadu Kirabira while appearing before the parliamentary education committee said it would be unfair to withdraw the centre numbers of a school over the actions of a selfish individual.

Kirabira adds that UNEB should put in place a mechanism to examine learners whose examination fees are stolen.
