Try out dark colours for your home decor

I had to quickly come to terms with the fact that dark palettes are also cozy and full of life.

HOMES&CONSTRUCTION

When it comes to home décor, I always fancy whites, creams plus a mix of blue and grey.

That's ‘my thing'. I love the clean lines and crisp beauty associated with airy colours.  Whenever dull colours cross my clean path, all I see are gloomy, sad and depressing hues.

However, when I visited Ameria Momo Matsiko's home in Nalya Kampala suburb, I couldn't help but marvel at the silent beauty.

Apart from her colorful outdoors embellished with all kinds of blooms, her living room makes a dramatic statement.

The dark green leather couches blend well with the black wall unit, black dining table and blue tiled floor.  All the other room accessories harmonize the picture.

Behind the scenes, Momo's dark green kitchen is another design feature that shows how she is not afraid of dark colours.

She prefers them bold with rich hues and crisp vibrancy for an overall statement. I had to quickly come to terms with the fact that dark palettes are also cozy and full of life.

Give your home a vibe of class with dark colours

Mariah Kiwagama, an interior designer with Amari Interiors delights in dark colours. She greatly relies on them to pull off lasting design impressions.

Dark rooms are good for those who love electric décor because they can bring together elements from different worlds.

To her, a dark bedroom can be as soothing as one with light and airy accents. Just add a little texture with a velvet headboard and fluffy rug for a luxurious feel.

Also, textures such as wood and metal plus fabrics such as linen, and suede will add depth to the space.

Blend the dark colours well

"Dark interiors can look and feel interesting and sophisticated," she opines adding, "There is an increase in demand for dark colours in interior spaces which is why dark grey interiors have made a comeback."

She is of a view to paint dark colours on walls, but keep the skirting, cornices and door flames light to create a good contrast.

Also, maximize earthly tones, neutrals, greens, browns while mixing them with creams. However, avoid using many patterns as they will make the room look cluttered.

Metallic accents can be added to dark interior concepts for a reflective effect.  Finish off the look with floral prints from cushion covers, wall hangings and area floor rugs among others.

You can also use wall paper rather than paint. Rich, bold wallpaper is a great choice for rooms of all types. It makes a statement effortlessly.

Meanwhile, use bold floral wallpaper in rooms with a simple color palette like the bathroom to avoid overwhelming them.

"It's a matter of how you complement them with textures and the right way of lighting. Always find a balance and harmony between colors within the concept," she highlights.

The dark palettes also work for libraries, dining rooms, and home office.

Keep your dark colors interesting and fresh.  Use glossy finishes on the architectural details such as the pillars and ceilings.
