In life, it is hard to see your future basing on your current circumstances. This was the case of Prof. Christopher Mbazira, the Makerere University School of Law's acting principal, who applied for a change of course three months into law school.

Upon joining the university, he had wanted to pursue a degree in education, but the government sponsorship slot gave him law.

"The initial weeks were not so pleasant. They were not as exciting as I had expected. Getting into law school, your perception of what the course is about is often criminal law. So you think that is all you are going to study, but then you find that legal study is too wide. I remember sitting in class looking at the history of tort and wondering if I could handle," he recalls.

Worse, Mbazira's confidence shrunk because the composition of his class had many students from elite schools in the country, who spoke eloquently and confidently.

The law dons too did nothing to boost his confidence as they used every chance to remind students that law was not for the fainthearted and that many would be discontinued if they were not serious.

"I made up my mind to change the course. My marks then qualified me for Mass Communication. I went to the Main Building to pick the forms for change of course but when I reached there, I was told the period for change of course had closed already," Mbazira narrates.
