The Police has called for severe punishments for perpetrators as a deterrent

The Police has cautioned the public against the increased theft of road signs that are being sold to dealers of the scrap/metal business that is booming across the country.

In a security report seen by New Vision, Police stated that: "Members of the public from various parts of the country have always vandalised and stolen road signposts, panels and guards for economic gain."

"This has greatly contributed to road accidents on various roads and has also dragged the progress of road marking by Uganda National Roads Authority," the report read in part.

As a result, the Police has called for severe punishments for perpetrators as a deterrent.

The Police arrested Richard Byamukama, a blacksmith while in possession of stolen road signposts in Bukora Parish, in Kabale district.

The arrest followed an operation conducted to crack down on residents engaged in vandalism and theft of road signposts and panels after some roadside guards and pipes were found missing along the Kabale-Katuna road.
