Motherhood after menopause

Jul 21, 2020

Namukwaya’s story is the story of many women who have not been able to bear children. What makes hers different is that after over 40 years of waiting, she finally became a mother at over 60 years.

MOTHER AT 60   I   CHILD BIRTH

Safina Namukwaya was married off at the age of 15. She conceived soon after, but lost the baby. And she never conceived again.

Fortunately, her husband did not use her condition as an excuse to throw her out of the family home. However, her husband's love for her did not spare her his family's ridicule or her having to take care of and raise his children resulting from extra marital affairs.

Namukwaya's story is the story of many women who have not been able to bear children. What makes hers different is that after over 40 years of waiting, she finally became a mother at over 60 years.

And yes, she was way past menopause. Hers is a story of the triumph of hope and determination over despair and scientific evidence that you cannot afford to miss.

But this story need not be about Namukwaya alone. As women continue to silently struggle with infertility related issues, there is some good news on the horizon. For the longest time, the science told us that age was the most important factor in conception.

It did not matter whether you exercised regularly and watched everything you ate beyond a certain age conception became harder and ultimately impossible.

Now that same science says nothing should stop you from attaining your dream of motherhood; neither age nor menopause. And it is being done here, in Uganda. So who is doing it, and how are they doing it?
