Floods disrupt transport in Kaliro

KALIRO - Recent floods on Bukerere swamp located in Gadumire sub-county, Kaliro district, have disrupted transport cutting off Kaliro from Pallisa district.

Locals have resorted to using boats to cross the two-kilometre stretch at a fee of sh5000.

Sanube Namuganza, a resident of Gadumire requested the district to come up with an immediate solution to the problem.

"Some locals including children who cannot afford sh5000, risk their lives to cross the deep waters. They have nothing to do because they need to access trading centres," Namuganza said.

She said expectant mothers in the area have lost access to antenatal care services at Bumanya health centre IV which could put their lives in danger. 

She blamed the district leaders for failing to address the problem that has now lasted two months.

Cyprian Mumbya the deputy Gombolola Internal Security Officer(GISO) Gadumire sub-county, said thugs have taken advantage of the current situation of the road to rob people or rape women, especially during night hours.

He said two cases of rape, five cases of robbery have been reported to police in the last two months.

What district leaders say

The chairman LC 5 Kaliro, Wyclif Ibanda urged locals to remain calm as the issue was being handled by the district roads committee.

Ibanda said a big section of the road network in the district had been rendered impassable as a result of the downpour.

Bulamogi county Member of Parliament, Kenneth Lubogo said efforts are underway to ensure the road is fixed avoid deaths as a result of drowning due to the flooded road.

"At the moment people should avoid crossing this road on foot because the water levels are rising each day, "he said
