Onyango said the police are investigating a case of murder and are yet to find out the reason why the late was moving at night, at the time of the incident.

Emmanuel Tegu, a third-year Veterinary student at Makerere University was last week on Sunday night attacked and badly beaten by a mob that allegedly mistook him for a thief.

After a tip-off, the police swung into action to his rescue, only that Tegu had been badly beaten and bruised by the mob which left him unconscious.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, told New Vision, that on arrival, police picked the student and rushed him to Mulago hospital, but sadly, he breathed his last on Saturday morning.

Onyango said the police are investigating a case of murder and are yet to find out the reason why the late was moving at night, at the time of the incident.

The police have also dismissed rumors circulating that the deceased could have been killed by the Local Defence Units (LDUs).

"No single LDU person is deployed at Makerere University," according to a police statement, which also notes that the security of Makerere University is manned by private security firms.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was attacked at around 11:00 pm, near Lumumba hall, in Makerere University on Sunday night, but breathed his last on Saturday at 3:00 am, at Mulago hospital, a week after the incident.

"At the time the victim died, the police had not recorded his statement to give us his last moments," said Onyango.

Tegu who was born on July 14, 1996, was pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Animal Production Technology and Management and was a member of Christ Heart Ministries International.

May his soul rest in peace
