COVID-19: Luuka district gets motorcycles to ease transport

As COVID-19 pandemic still ravaging the country, Luuka district has received motorcycles that will be used to ease transport by Village Health Teams (VHT) and a team of safe the future to increase awareness on COVID-19 in hard to reach areas.

The brand new motorcycles were handed over to the minister for presidency Esther Mbayo, also the Luuka woman MP by the vice president Hareesha Prabhu of Kalpataru power transmission.

Prabhu said the donation will help to ease transport during sensitization process in communities during and post COVID-19 period.  The donation is valued at about sh20m.

The beneficiary of the motorcycles Anthony Mula who is also the chief executive officer Safe the future, a community-based organisation said the donation comes at the right time when there is a need to increase awareness on COVID-19 in communities.

"The motor cycles will increase our vigilance and reach out communities which are hard to reach," Mula added.

Hard to reach sub counties include Ikubya, Nawampi, and Bulongo, among others. Luuka district has a population of 241,453 according to Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) 2014 Census

Mbayo, who received the motorcycles on behalf of the organisation commended Kalpataru power transmission for the generous contribution saying communities will be able to adhere to the guidelines that have been put in place by the government through the Ministry of health.

Some of the guidelines designed by the ministry of health include: washing hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub, maintain a reasonable distance between yourself and someone who is coughing, sneezing at least one meter apart, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and people with flu-like symptoms should use face masks to cover the nose.

Others are, clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, car doors, and elevator buttons.

Kalpataru Power Transmission recently donated a brand-new Pick Up towards the National Task Force for COVID-19 response.
