Local rugby could resume early May

KAMPALA - The Nile Stout Premier Rugby League could resume on May 2 if the coronavirus lockdown is not extended.

Uganda Rugby Union (URU) secretary Peter Odongo outlined the roadmap for the resumption of the rugby calendar activities.

Rugby activity effectively ground to a halt on March 18 when President Yoweri Museveni announced the first set of nationwide measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

All social activities, including sports, were suspended to prevent crowds.

"We shall give teams 10 days to regroup and then resume the league on May 2," said Odongo in a statement.

The decision to resume the league and other activities is on the assumption that the month-long nationwide lockdown is lifted after April 18.

At the time of the suspension, defending champions Heathens were leading the log on 63 points with an unbeaten run.

Kobs (58) and Black Pirates (48) are in close second and third respectively.

Mongers (39), Buffaloes (27), Hippos (24), Warriors (21) and Rams (13) are the other teams in the league, with Impis (11) and Rhinos (6) fighting against relegation.
