KAMPALA - The Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has applauded security minister, Gen. Elly Tumwine for giving a good example of social distancing in regard to the fight against COVID-19.

Yesterday (Saturday) at a function where the PM flagged off food distribution to the 1.4m needy people in Kampala and Wakiso held along the Nile Avenue in Kampala, Gen. Tumwine came riding a bike. He was accompanied by about six UPDF guards.

Rugunda said the general's decision to turn up for a public function riding a bike was a good gesture towards the fight against the pandemic.

The general caused excitement when he arrived at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and parked his bike but was shortly afterwards told the function had been shifted from the building main hall to the open space in the middle of the road outside Serena Conference Centre.

He then jumped on his bike again, attracting journalists and cheers from fellow ministers. Some of his guards, riding ordinary bicycles were however seen struggling to peddle and getting their guns firm. One almost lost control.

The General was later seen warning journalists from crowding themselves, asking them to observe social distancing.

After the function, as ministers and other government officials left the venue in their powerful vehicles, Gen Tumwine was seen instructing his guards to follow him.

It was at this moment when the PM came in his convoy and recognised him. "That is commendable Ndugu. Keep up that is a good thing to emulate," he commented.
