Chess Star Ssegwanyi further improves

If you have been following Uganda's chess events, you will agree that International Master (IM) Arthur Ssegwanyi is currently on top of his game.

Cruising at a record rating of 2390, he is the highest-rated player in East Africa and among the top 30 on the continent.

At 2390, he is threatening to break even more barriers by crossing the 2400 mark and potentially becoming the very first player in the region to do so.

But as we all know chess is a pretty dynamic game, rating points tend to slip through your fingers a lot more quickly than they come.

However, Ssegwanyi has continued to prove himself by exhibiting consistent excellence in all his most recent events.

Despite a disappointing finish at the All Africa Games late last year, he quickly bounced back at the December 2019 Rwabushenyi Memorial and Kireka Open Chess Championships in which he emerged the overall winner with nearly maximum points.

He appears to be riding that wave into 2020 as well going by these first few months. Even though he hasn't made appearances at all events in the year so far, he has definitely left his print at those which he has attended.

Early in February, he traveled across the border for the Rwanda Open where he walked away in first place with a perfect score, then followed this up with an even more impressive performance at the more competitive Uganda Open last weekend where he won first place uncontested.

Things are definitely looking up for the IM and I have a feeling this will be his year.

Watching to see him overcoming events throughout the rest of the year and if he will maintain his records even on the international scene.
