STATE HOUSE

The first "state House" of Uganda was built in 1900. When it was first constructed, it was called Government House.

In October 1963, by Act of Parliament, the name changed to State House. The building was erected at Nsamizi Hill, Entebbe where the current State House is situated.

It was also the first building in Uganda to have pipe water, a flashing toilet and glass windows. The building was constructed by a British soldier and architect, Fredrick Spire to house Sir Harry Johnston, the First Special British Commissioner to Uganda.

Johnston is famous for designing and implementing the 1900 Uganda agreement. As a Special Commissioner, he had powers to rule Uganda as its President on behalf of the British.

The grass-thatched building, was also the first office cum-residential building in Uganda. It was also the first modern building in Uganda with a sitting room, a conference, dining, study room, master bedroom, guest room, kitchen, and store.
