BUSINESS PROPOSALS FOR SUPPORT TO ACQUIRE WOOD PROCESSING FACILITIES (IMPROVED MOBILE SAW MILL TECHNOLOGIES)

In 2004, the Government of Uganda, together with the Government of Norway and the European Union, started the Sawlog Production Grant Scheme (SPGS) and supported dedicated private sector investors to plant trees throughout the country; consequently, helping to establish an extensive forestry plantation resource. Some of these plantations are due for harvesting and processing into timber and wood products. However, there are limited improved wood processing facilities in Uganda and so many tree growers are unable to start converting their trees into timber and other products.

To close this processing gap, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through SPGS Phase III, has earmarked funds to support private commercial tree growers/wood processors (on a cost-sharing basis), in the four regions below, to acquire improved mobile sawmills to aid efficient wood processing:
