Muslim cleric murder: Police hunt for top suspect

KAMPALA - The Police in Bugiri district are hunting for the key suspect after a top Muslim cleric was shot dead last night.

James Mubi, the Police spokesperson for Busoga East, said in a statement that four suspects were already in custody over the murder of Sheik Mutumba Masudi.

"Sheikh Mutumba was the Imam of Iwemba Mosque, Iwemba sub-county in Bugiri.
The incident occurred yesterday at around 9pm at the deceased's home in Busimba village, Mubi said.

"He was shot by a single bullet targeted to his head and he died instantly," the police officer added.

"An exhibit (cartridge) of an AK47 riffle was recovered and has been submitted to our forensic experts to establish which gun was used in committing the crime," he added.

Mubi said the hunt for the prime suspect by a joint security team was underway.
 
"We will continue to work around the clock to investigate the motive of this shooting and bring all those involved to book," Mubi added.

Past murders
Over the years, several Muslim clerics have been killed by unknown assailants.
Those killed include Sheikh Abdul Karim Sentamu, a Muslim scholar, who was shot dead in April 2012 in Kampala.

Around June of 2012, Abubaker Kiweewa was also shot dead by unknown gunmen in Kyanja, a city suburb.

Come the Christmas Day of 2014, and Abdul Kadir Muwaya, the Shiite leader commonly referred to as Dakhtur, was killed while at his Mayuge home.

Three days later, Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga was shot and killed at a mosque in Bwebajja on Entebbe Road.

In 2015, gunmen shot dead Sheikh Abdulrashid Wafula in Mbale town. Wafula was the Imam of Bilal Mosque.

In the same year, gunmen killed Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kirya in Bweyogerere, Wakiso district.
