KAMPALA - Uganda should embrace the use of renewable energy to foster growth in the country, according to Iain Patton, the chief executive officer at East Asia Utilities Corporation (EAUC) said during his visit to Uganda, recently.
Patton said the Pearl of Africa's beauty, which encompasses wildlife and wetlands needs to be protected at all costs.
He added that the pressure that people had put on the environment had resulted in its mass destruction and its ecosystem.
"I wish to appreciate higher institutions of learning in Uganda such as Ndejje University for the innovations that they have brought on board to protect the environment," he said. The university's students and staff are involved in municipal bio-waste recycling.
Patton also noted that this kind of education helps students to have a positive change towards preserving the environment and understanding the social as well as economic dynamics.
Fredrick Kakembo, Ndejje university deputy vice-chancellor asked the Government to protect the wetlands.
"The Government should look at the natural value of wetlands before allowing investors to establish permanent factories, which leads to a gross impact on the environment," he says.
