Al Ahly to host Africa Volleyball Club Championship

Feb 06, 2020

The men’s championship for the last 12 years has been held in North Africa

For the third year in a row, Al Ahly has won the right to host the Africa Club championships. They put in a bid of sh147m which was not matched by any side, giving them the women's championships.

For the three Uganda teams, UCU (men) Nemostars (men) and KCB Nkumba (women), it is back to the drawing board as they scramble to raise at least sh100m to travel for the week-long championship in Egypt.

"The tournament being in Egypt is an advantage for the Arabs because Egypt fielded more teams last year," Nkumba coach Tony Lakony said.

The men's championship for the last 12 years has been held in North Africa, ruling out the less privileged sub-Saharan nations, while the women have played in North Africa since 2013.

"It's also quite central and monotonous. It is not good for the sport because if you move it about, then you get more team and fans," Lakony said.

It also comes as no surprise that the last winners of the competition in Antananarivo for the women were Kenya Prisons.
