Former national rally champion Christakis Fitidis is determined to defy age and prove that motorsport is all about skill and fitness.

The 68-year-old has joined the race for the East African Rally Championship starting with the Guru Nanak rally on Saturday and Sunday in Machakos, Kenya.

"Yes, I want to try out the East Africa championship this year and I will battle the young men this weekend in Kenya," Fitidis said.

The 2017 winner joins national champion Yassin Nasser, who is also targeting the same title that is competed for by crews from Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and
Tanzania whose events form the championship.

The East Africa championship kicks off with the Guru Nanak rally and will be followed by the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla rally in May, Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally in August, Tanzania Rally in September and then the Burundi rally in October.

"It is a great experience competing with top crews outside your country, in different terrain. It helps you improve on how to handle pressure and also negotiate through the different routes," the Oryxfueled driver added.

Yasin and Fitidis will face off with Kenya top crews including Carl Tundo (EVOX), Karan Patel (Ford Fiesta), Eric Bengi, Onkar Rai (Volks Wagen Polo) and Ian Duncan (Nissan Patrol) who have already confirmed participation.

Fitidis was, however, concerned with the way FMU drew the calendar giving no room for local crews to compete in the East Africa championship.

"I'm disappointed with FMU, especially Mr. (Jeff) Kabagambe. If all federations agreed to have the East Africa championship, then it should be respected and drivers are given enough time for preparation," Fitidis said.
