Rugby 7s: Ocen, Massa make 12-man squad

Uganda has a tough race ahead, competing against 15 other highly ranked teams across the globe for a place in the next season’s World Rugby sevens series.

KAMPALA - Rugby Cranes 7s team head coach Tolbert Onyango has named a 12-man squad that will travel to Chile and Uruguay for the inaugural World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series.

Debutants Levis Ocen and Isaac Massa made the cut to join experienced starts Micheal Wokorach (captain), Phillip Wokorach (assistant captain), Pius Ogena, Desire Ayera, Ian Munyani, Solomon Okia, Adrian Kasito, Aaron Ofoywroth, Norbert Okeny and William Nkore.

"These are the best players we have got and as a technical bench, we are confident they will deliver," Onyango said after naming the squad Wednesday evening at Kyadondo Rugby Ground.

The teams lined up for the 2020 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series are Brazil, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Portugal, Tonga, Uganda, Uruguay and Zimbabwe.

They will be joined by three invitational teams from America: Colombia, Mexico and Paraguay.

The emerging top eight core teams after the two rounds will then compete in the final playoff tournament for a spot in the World Rugby Sevens Series, replacing the bottom-placed core team in the World Series the following season.

The two legs of the inaugural World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series will be played in Viña del Mar, Chile on February 15 and 16, and Montevideo in Uruguay on February 22-23.
