At least five people died on the spot and two were injured when a bus rammed into a Toyota Noah at Kyabadaza, Masaka district on Friday.

According to the Police, the Noah was making a U-turn in the middle of the highway when it was crushed by the bus belonging to Global Coaches.

The afternoon accident, the Greater Masaka Regional Traffic Officer, Anthony Nkesiga, said was caused by negligence on the side of the driver of the small car.

"How can you make a U-turn in the middle of a busy highway? Traffic flow is high and the road is very busy. We advise the drivers to be careful," Nkesiga told New Vision by telephone.

The accident comes hours after the Police issued a statement, warning motorists to abide by the traffic rules.

"Respect other road users," the Police warned, adding: "Report anybody seen violating traffic rules and regulations on Toll-free line 0800199099, 0718357497 or WhatsApp 0787176649."

About 20,000 accidents are registered in Uganda each year, with about 2,000 deaths.
