Suspects in judge attack in court

Six of the people suspected of hurling a water bottle at a judge appeared at the Buganda Road Court on Wednesday morning where the case was adjourned to December 8 after the prosecution said it is still conducting investigations.

Augustine Ojubile, Ingrid Turinawe, Moses Katumba, Abdallah Waiswa, Zaina Fatuma, Simon Wanyera and Joel Kabali are accused of hurling a bottle at Gladys Kamasanyu during the chaotic sentencing of Dr Stella Nyanzi in August.

Police battles FDC women

Police fired teargas as it intercepted Forum for Democratic Change Women's League members who planned to march to Parliament from the party's headquarters in Najjanankumbi in protest against brutality meted out on Ugandans by security agencies.

Parliament grills Makerere officials 

After being turned away on Tuesday by Members of Parliament on the Education Committee, Makerere University officials led by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe returned to answer queries over the unrest at the institution sparked the recent 15% tuition increment.

During today's sitting, some MPs called for Nawangwe to be relieved of his duties saying that his reign has seen the most student expulsions, lecturer strikes and many other problems.

The MPs tasked the officials to among other things justify why the students are paying large amounts of money but are sleeping in dilapidated halls of residence.

Hoima RDC involved in accident

Samuel Kisembo the Hoima district Resident District Commissioner was on Wednesday involved in a road accident along the Kabwoya-Kyangwali road in Kikuube district.

Speaking to New Vision, Kisembo's wife said he has been admitted in hospital and that his condition is critical.

Defence ministry officials quizzed

Also appearing before the Education Committee of Parliament on Wednesday were officials from the internal affairs and defence ministries to answer queries stemming from the handling of the recent strike at Makerere University by security officers.

Among the officials was Obiga Kania the state minister for internal affairs, defence minister Adolf Mwesige, Wilson Mbadi the Deputy Chief of the Defence Forces and Brig Richard Karemire the UPDF spokesman.

S4 finalist killed

Walusimbi Ganiru, 17, who had just completed his Uganda Certificate of Education exams at Bright College Secondary School in Busia died when the house he was living collapsed overnight and killed him instantly.

The incident happened in Solo C village, North B Ward, Western Division of Busia Municipal Council in Busia District.

Taxi operators petition Museveni

Taxi operators through their umbrella body UTRADA have written to President Yoweri Museveni urging him to put in place a probe into misconduct among traffic policemen.

UTRADA chairman Mustapha Mayambala claimed that the officers connive with employees of banks to levy charges on the taxi operators among other things.

Pharmacists awarded

The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda has awarded the assistant director at the Health Monitoring Unit, Dr Brian Arinitwe and Dr Jjumba Ponsiano for outstanding contribution to the pharmacy profession.

The unit was established by President Yoweri Museveni to independently monitor and access the delivery of health services across the country.
