  3.30pm |   IN PICTURES: When Kenzo arrived


Eddy Kenzo has been a staple of local news outlets in recent weeks. The embattled musician has been - and still is - dealing with cupid matters surrounding his botched affair with fellow musician Rema Namakula.

The ex-couple's broken relationship has graced local dailies and tabloids in equal measure.

But after winning the African Entertainer of 2019 award at the African Entertainment Awards in the US, attention has shifted to his latest glory. Yes, he is no stranger to winning awards, and his most recent honours has had his huge fan base relish the artiste's triumph and many of them thronged Entebbe International Airport on Tuesday to receive him.

 

After squeezing his way through the arrivals section, thanks to his minders flexing a bit of muscle, Kenzo emerged to a huge welcome as his fans ulutated and sang him praise.

 
He wore a tunic, taqiyah (Muslim cap) and cool shades. His newly-acquired accolade tight in his left hand.

 
It was helter-skelter scenes as fans dashed to get a peek at the musician.

 
Kenzo oozed admirable exuberance as he stood through the open roof of the vehicle moving him from the airport, as his security detail followed closely, keeping unecessary intrusion at bay.

The musician's arrival was covered extensively  by the press, with reporters scrambling to get a word or two from the music star from atop his vehicle.

 
The road from the airport was packed as Kenzo's entourage snaked through, allowing the musician time to bask in his glory.

It has been an emotional last couple of weeks for him. This triumphant break could not have come at a better time!

 
Meanwhile, many people temporarily abandoned their businesses to espy the artiste.

 
Many stood at the roadside to soak in the excitement enveloping Kenzo's arrival.

President Yoweri Museveni has flown off to Russia to attend the Russia-Africa Summit.

It is understood the summit will focus attention on "actual and potential relations between Russia and the nations of Africa, in the political, economic, humanitarian, and cultural fields among others".

2.05pm |   Latest cabinet resolutions

 

Meanwhile, earlier today, several officials addressed the press at the Uganda Media Centre.

First up was Florence Nakiwala, the State minister for youth and children affairs, who briefed reporters about the cabinet resolutions taken on Monday at the Office of the President.

She talked about the progress on the implementation of withdrawal, rehabilitation, tracing and resettlement of street children. Some of the objectives of the ongoing implementation of street children action plan are:

• To ensure that orphans, vulnerable children and their families access basic essential services package.

• To ensure that resources for intervention that benefit orphans and other vulnerable children are mobilized and efficiently utilized.

Nakiwala also touched on the progress made on the implementation of the sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and approved proposals to address challenges faced in the implementation of the SDGs.

According to the minister, cabinet approved the establishment and operationalization of service centres in the public service. The expected benefits of the implementation of the establishment and operationalization of the centres include;

• Citizens will enjoy simplified service delivery processes, user-friendly systems, convenience of single space location of services, timely and affordable public services

•  Government and private sector service providers, public servants and development partners will enjoy provision of high quality and timely services, reaching out to a big number of clients, completeness of services and motivation.

Scores of Eddy Kenzo fans have made their way to Entebbe International Airport to receive him, only days after he won the African Entertainer of 2019 award in the US.

He won it at the African Entertainment Awards, USA.

Parliament's natural resources committee has met with the management of plastic products (kaveera) stakeholders (Uganda Plastics Manufacturers And Recyclers Association) with various sector ministers . 

This is as a result of a petition to the Speaker by members of the association, who challenge a cabinet resolution to set up a committee headed by Eng. John Byabagambi to prepare a cabinet paper on whether to close or not to close plastics and recycling plants, months after the National Environment Act was passed by Parliament.

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has expressed her dissatisfaction with Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) for not supporting the Miss Tourism initiative.

"They are interested when these girls are coming back - and they show up, including the tourism minister. But they fail to support them in terms of air tickets and the necessary support to compete in these pageants," she says.

Miss Tourism 2019 Phiona Kyeru will today fly out destined for Malaysia to participate in the Miss Tourism International. As many as 60 nations will be represented. The finals of the competition are slated for November 9.

Speaker Kadaga bought an air ticket for Kyeru.

She regrets why the government has no channels to support such initiatives, as former Miss Uganda and current Miss World Africa Quiin Abenakyo also faced the same challenges when she left to take part in the finals in China.

Kadaga has implored Ugandans to vote for Miss Tourism, who is carrying the country's flag high.

When his flight touches down at Entebbe International Airport this afternoon, Eddy Kenzo should expect a huge homecoming.

He is a big name in Uganda's current-generation music industry, which of course means the Sitya Loss star has a massive fan base. Ahead of his return from the US, some of his ardent followers have printed T-shirts in tribute to the musician.

He is being considered Uganda's 'biggest export'.

11.05am |   Uganda to host 4th African Fourth Judicial Dialogue

Uganda will on October 30 host the 4th edition of the African Union Fourth Judicial Dialogue, which brings together the judiciaries of the African Union member states.

According to the chairperson of the National Organising Committee, Esta Nambayo, the overall objective of Uganda hosting the dialogue is to enhance international judicial co-operation through sharing of judiciary challenges and best practices among states across Africa and beyond.

"The dialogue is expected to highlight experiences, challenges and best practices towards better administration of justice and sound protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms in their respective countries," she said.

New Vision's Abbey Ramadhan has checked out what is going on inside Nakivubo Stadium, which is being reconstructed. He says works are going albeit at a slow pace.

The facility, called Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium, was opened in 1926 on land donated by the Kabaka of Buganda and was modernized in 1954 by the British colonial government to commemorate the lives of Ugandans killed during the Second World War.

The 2nd International Conference on Governance and Service Delivery in Developing Economies is under way in Kampala. Former South African president Thabo Mbeki will deliver a keynote address at the meet.

Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) chief executive has welcomed the dignitaries from over 30 countries to Uganda and has urged them to tour Uganda's attractions.

"I took some foreign friends around Uganda for 21 days and when we were done, they said 'Uganda is not just the Pearl of Africa, it is the Pearl of the World'," she said.

9.55am |   'Diseases do not respect borders'

 

On Tuesday, a Ugandan delegation of health officials, including health minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, flew to neighbouring DR Congo to attend a ministerial meeting on on cross-border collaboration on tackling the Ebola outbreak.

During the meeting, officials touched on a number of key areas on the subject. They underlined the importance of cross-border collaboration in disease outbreaks, especially because of inter-linkages and common social economic activities.

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization regional director for Africa, said diseases "do not respect borders",  saying the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo, Uganda's neighbour to the west, has "emphasized the significance of collaboration".

She gave an example of how Uganda's health ministry and DR Congo "continuously share updates on WhatsApp on suspected and possible cases who cross borders".

She said Uganda and DR Congo also share resources and expertise. A case in point was when cases were reported in Uganda, DR Congo sent the Ebola vaccine and vaccinators.
