Renowned Cranes spectator granted bail

KAMPALA-The Buganda Road Court, Chief Magistrate, Miriam Ayo Akello, has granted bail to Jackson Sewanyana, a prominent Uganda Cranes spectator.

Sewanyana alias ‘Uncle Money' and his co-accused, Benson Senyonga are facing charges of manslaughter.

 The offence contravenes sections 187 (1) and 190 of the Penal code Act.

The magistrate bonded them a cash bail of sh2m, each, accompanied with stringent terms.

"I find it necessary to grant bail to the two accused having found all their sureties substantial. You are, however, ordered to execute sh2m cash and your sureties sh10m, non-cash," Akello ruled as she adjourned the case to November 7, 2019.

The duo's bail came with a long list of release conditions including reporting to court whenever summoned, not at any time intimidate any of the witnesses in regards to the case and their national identity cards were retained by the court. 

Sewanyana, who also doubles as the Express principal cheer-leader, is the vice-chairperson of local council one Kasubi Zone IV, Rubaga division in Kampala district.

Among the sureties he presented were; Michael Nsubuga, 49, the LC1 chairperson, Kawaala Zone, Peter Tamale, 33, the LC2 chairperson Kasubi Parish and Joseph Kagwa, 30.

The state prosecutor, Timothy Amerit, told the court that more witnesses were to be brought on the next adjournment prior to the four who already testified in court.   

The law

Under the law, any person who by unlawful act or omission causes the death of another person commits a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life.

The charge

The prosecution alleges that the Sewanyana, Senyonga, and others still at large, during the night of August 16, 2019, at Kasubi Zone IV in  Kampala district, unlawfully caused the death of Siraji Tumusiime Akim, an act contrary to sections 187 (1) and 190 of the Penal Code Act.
