Businessman shot dead at a Kampala hospital

What started as a bundle of joy, turned tragic when Ali Abdu Jabar, a new father who had gone to visit his wife and baby was shot dead, at Kampala Independent Hospital in Ntinda city suburbs.

Deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire has since revealed that the incident happened on Saturday at around 11:30 am.

Owoyesigire said the 36-year-old Jabar together with one Zaina Karama had gone to visit his wife Fatuma Mohamed who had delivered by C-section.

A police report on the incident states that Karama was "playing" with Jabar's pistol while at the hospitals' VIP waiting area.

"Ali cautioned her (Zaina) not to play with the pistol and went ahead to remove the Magazine from the pistol. He, however, forgot that he had earlier on loaded it," Owoyesigire said, quoting preliminary reports.

Karama did not heed to Jabar's plea and instead ignored and continued playing with the firearm. Unknowingly, the pistol was pointing in the direction of Jabar and suddenly, a bullet went off and shot him in the right chest, according to Owoyesigire.

"He was immediately rushed to the theatre at the same hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival," he said.

Karama is said to also have collapsed after the incident and is currently unconscious at Kampala Independent Hospital's Intensive Care Unit. Karama is a cousin to Jabar's wife.

Jabar was an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs attached to the office of the Minister, Gen. Jeje Odong. He is also believed to own a chain of businesses in Najjera, Kira municipality, Wakiso district, according to Owoyesigire.

Subsequently, a case of murder by shooting has been opened at Ntinda Police Station, Vide CRB. 309/2019.

The DPC Kira road and his team visited the scene, today.

Jabar's body has been taken to the city mortuary for postmortem. His pistol has been recovered and is in safe custody, according to the Police.
