TODAY IN HISTORY: When the Kabaka got a triumphant return

The Kabaka had been deported to Britain in 1953 following disagreements with the Governor of the protectorate, Sir Andrew Cohen.

Kabaka Edward Mutesa II returned amid tumultuous rejoicing to Buganda from England where he had been in exile amid joyful celebrations and triumph, Buganda welcomed home their Kabaka, Edward Muteesa II, from two years of exile in Britain.

The Kabaka had been deported to Britain in 1953 following disagreements with the Governor of the protectorate, Sir Andrew Cohen.

On November 30, 1953, the Kabaka of Buganda Frederick Mutesa II was deposed and exiled to England by the British colonial governor Sir Andrew Cohen, leaving thousands of his people mourning and angrily protesting the action.

The deportation was carried out after the Lukiiko had sought independence from Uganda with Kabaka Mutesa himself demanding Buganda be separated from the rest of Uganda, the British protectorate.
