October 1, 1999 - Uganda Airlines sale delayed

The signing of the agreement for the sale of 49% shares in Uganda Airlines Corporation to South African Airways hit a snag after Members of Parliament and the Privatisation Unit officials failed to reach a consensus.

October 16, 1999 - Museveni on the pitch

President Yoweri Museveni slapped on a jersey and football boots and went on to showcase his soccer skills just before the Uganda Kobs vs Zimbabwe match at Namboole Stadium. The Kobs lost 3-0.

October 19, 1999 - Nyerere returns home

The body of former Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere arrived in Tanzania from the UK where he died five days before (October 14). Benjamin Mkapa, Tanzanian president at the time, announced Nyerere's death on national television, and also proclaimed a 30-day mourning period. President Museveni led a 10-man delegation for the burial.

October 26, 1999 - Ex-Vice President dies

Uganda's former Vice President Samson Kisekka died in London at the age of 87. Kisekka was fondly known as omusawo omutendeke. He was a medical doctor, who served as Prime Minister of Uganda from 1986 to 1991 and Vice President of Uganda from 1991 to 1994.

Also related, on January 25, 2003, President Yoweri Museveni took part in a curtain-raiser match between Cabinet and FM radio presenters at Mandela National Stadium.

He was the captain of the Cabinet team and before kickoff, he shook hands with Siasa Senkubuge, the skipper of the radio presenters side.

 
During the game, Museveni, wearing his trademark hat, had to take a corner.

 
That's when he showed just how fit he is when he swept in the ball with admirable elasticity. BANG!

 

In 1992, Vice President Dr. Samson Kisekka auctioned a portrait of Pope John Paul II during a luncheon at Kampala Sheraton Hotel to raise funds for the Popal visit early February.
