Cheptegei’s victory follows his star performance in the 5000m race in the IAAF Diamond league championship final in the Swiss city of Zurich last week.

IAAF Diamond league 5000m champion, Joshua Cheptegei was voted USPA sports personality of the month of August in Kampala on Monday.

Cheptegei's victory follows his star performance in the 5000m race in the IAAF Diamond league championship final in the Swiss city of Zurich last week.

He won the race and recorded a personal best record of 12:57:41.

The 22-year-old athlete beat fellow athlete Ronald Musagala who won the IAAF Diamond League race of 1500m Paris Grand Prix to set a national record of 3.30.58.

He also beat David Ssemujju and Isaac Masembe both who won silver medals in their respective weights in the recently concluded All Africa Games in the Moroccan city of Rabat.

Cheptegei received 305 points, Ssemujju, and Masembe 285 points and lastly Musagala who got 260 points.

The voting ceremony was presided over by USPA president Patrick Kanyomozi alongside association secretary Johnson Were.

Kanyomozi expressed his dissatisfaction with USPA members shying away from the association activities and warned that it paints a bad image for members not to turn up whenever events and activities concerning the association are organised.

"There is a dangerous trend amongst us, and that is not attending USPA meetings and activities", warned Kanyomozi.

His warnings come after members shied away from the annual memorial mass later this month at Christ the King church, Mulago Ward paint campaign and the  Lugazi memorial activities.

"It's very unfortunate that USPA members forego the association's activities and meetings to attend their personal activities, members who show up also have their activities to attend, but forego them for the association's sake" added Kanyomozi
