Police arrest suspect over slain social worker

In a statement, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango the suspect was in police custody and helping with investigations.

The police have arrested one suspect in connection to the brutal murder of Maria Nagirinya and Ronald Kitayimbwa who went missing on Wednesday night.

The bodies of the two were recovered on Friday dumped at Nakitutulu village in Nama Sub-county, on the Mukono-Kayunga road.

In a statement, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango the suspect was in police custody and helping with investigations. "We shall not share his identity with the public at the moment as it may jeopardize investigations."

Police also said the motive of the killing was not yet established but that they were investigating the case of double murder.

Police also stated that they recovered Nagirinya's car in Natete on Thursday night and that it had bloodstains in the seats. "We located the vehicle and preserved it for scene processing today. Today we proceeded to the scene and recovered Nakirinya's national identity card, her shoes and bloodstains in the car seats," Onyango said.

He noted that the Police in Nama received information that there were two dead bodies in Nakituli, in Nama Sub County in Mukono district and they rushed and preserved the scene for the forensic officers from Kampala to joint them.

"The relatives have positively identified the body and confirmed that the two people are the ones we have been looking for. Kitayimbwa was identified by his brother Robert Lubega and Nakirinya was identified by his uncle Mohammed Kintu.

Nagirinya who was a staff of CIDI (Community Integrated Development Initiatives (CIDI) a Non-Government Organisation that works in the Water and Sanitation sub-sector on Wednesday night at around 11:00 pm shortly after his younger sister had opened for her the gate by two men who trailed her to there rented premises at Lungujja-Busega Community zone.

According to her close friend Rose Mwambazi, Nagirinya attended a training at the NGO's office in Muyenga on Wednesday and left at 2 pm. "We had training in Muyenga CIDI offices that ended at 2 pm and she than drove away even before having lunch. We didn't know where she went. At around 11 pm, we received a call from her father who reported she had been kidnapped," Mwambazi said.

On Thursday morning, the family reported a kidnap case at Busega Kibumbubiro police station under reference 04/29/08/2019. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed they had opened up a case and also recorded statements.

Both the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence and Internal Security Organisation had joined the hunt. The hunt is now on for the suspects.
