Wasswa's tragic accident ended his identicalness to Kato

 

 

 

The 43-year-olds are both electrical mechanics. Wasswa says that before he got an accident, their customers couldn't tell who is who since they worked in the same workshop.

 

"At one time when we were still working in Kamwokya, there is a certain customer who brought his radio for repair and he gave it to Kato because I was not around at that moment. Kato gave him three days to pick his radio. The customer returned after the said period but this time he found me instead of Kato. I knew nothing about his radio so I tried to explain to him. He insisted that I had sold off his radio," Wasswa narrated

 

According to Kato, several other instances occurred where people kept on mistaking them. He adds that the only person who could differentiate them was their mother.

 

"Our mother always knew how to differentiate us. There is this black mark that we both have on one of our right-hand fingernails. However, Wasswa's mark has always been brown and mine is black so our mother knew who is who on that basis," explained Kato

 

Unfortunately, in 2012, Wasswa and Kato were hit by a tragedy when Wasswa got an accident along the northern bypass. Wasswa narrates that as he was sitting on a boda boda on the road, a car from nowhere lost control, hit him and broke his right arm. The right-hand side of his body was left permanently injured.

 

"After spending close to six months in the hospital, I never stayed the same physically. This definitely meant that I was not going to be 100% identical to my brother because I had become a bit disabled and got some scars on my face," Wasswa said

 

The pain was not only for the injuries but for losing their physical identicalness as twins. The two say that this really hurt them although they have now come to terms with it.

 

Interestingly, Kato is now a proud father of twins, Babirye and Nakato. He says apart from the fact that he cannot be called Ssalongo because of tradition, he feels very proud that he also brought a set of twins on earth.

 

Wasswa and Kato are extremely excited about this year's Twins Festival slated for August 25 at Namboole stadium. They revealed that they cannot wait to mix and mingle with their fellow twins. Kato added that they will also share their story with other twins.
