Family of five die of suspected food poison

MPIGI - Five people from the same family at Nantwala village, Nakirebe Sub County in Mpigi district have died after eating suspected poisoned food.

The deceased include two females and three males who were renting at Francis Musisi's houses where they had stayed for only three days.

It is alleged the deceased rented the house on Monday evening and they were found dead on Thursday evening by their relatives.

According to Musisi, he received a man who identified himself as Eric Hagimaana on Sunday evening and asked to rent a room for his family. 

"The man came to me on Sunday evening looking for a room to rent. He paid for two months but I was surprised to learn that five of the family members had been killed by unknown people," Musisi said.

Andrew Ainembabazi, a Mpigi district Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer says they recovered two bottles of ambience walagi, a saucepan with meat and cassava flour from the house which implies that the deceased first ate the food before they succumbed to death.

He added that investigations started in order to find and arrest the culprit who they suspect to be Hagimaana the father of the deceased.

"We believe Hagimaana was behind the death of his family members because he was with them since Monday but on the fateful day he disappeared and his whereabouts are currently unknown," Ainembabazi explained.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago hospital mortuary for postmortem while police search for their other relatives since they had no identification cards.
