Italian national found dead on Bulago islands

The Kampala Metropolitan police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire, said the deceased is suspected to have committed suicide.

MUKONO-Police have kicked off investigations into the circumstances under which an Italian national died.

Pierluigi Benni 73, was found lifeless at his residence, at Bulago islands located on Lake Victoria in Mukono district.

The Kampala Metropolitan police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire, said the deceased is suspected to have committed suicide.

He died on Saturday from the residence of a one Lucas Bally Luigi, a Swiss national and businessman in Kampala.

"We suspect he committed suicide using his pistol. He was found with a deep wound which we suspect was caused by a gunshot. We believe he shot himself thus leading to his death as a result of bleeding," he noted.

Owoyesigire said police recovered his gun, phones and other items which have been submitted to the Government laboratory.

According to investigations and statements from the neighbours; the deceased would always shoot in the air.

"This was backed up by the gun cartridges which were picked around his residence," he noted.

Investigations further indicate that his gun (star pistol), was registered and privately licensed by Katwe Police and later renewed in Arua where he had gone.

The deceased was also found to be a dual citizen with two permissible passports from Uganda and Italy.

Owoyosigire said they have already contacted the Italian Embassy to make arrangements for his body, as investigations are still ongoing.
