MUST Staff reject reappointment of Prof. Obua

REAPPOINTMENT

MBARARA - The rift between embattled Prof. Obua Celestine and his section of academic staffs of Mbarara University of Science and Technology continues to deepen as the latter reject the former's reappointment.

The academic staff have vowed to seek legal redress in courts of law.

In a letter dated July, 29 addressed to the new chairman of MUST council Warren Namara categorically indicate how staff have rejected the reappointment of Prof. Obua Celestine as the Vice-chancellor effective from October, 25 this year for another five-year term.

Prof. Obua made the announcement of his reappointment at the recent senate meeting that was held on July 25, 2019, at Kihumuro main compass. 

"As you are all aware MUST intranet has presented a section of staffs purporting to be congratulating Prof. Obua upon his hearsay reappointment as the vice-chancellor MUST for the next five years, interestingly Obua is also rejoindered to that email thread also confirmed his reappointment," the letter read

We inform the MUST community and general public that the 77thmeeting of the university council held on July, 25 at Kihumuro released a circular reiterating in item 5 of the council resolutions that they noted the reappointment of Vice-chancellor by the university chancellor," the letter further read

It continues, "We strongly reject the illegality and irregularity in Prof. Obua's reappointment based on; one, it negates and flouts the provisions of University and Other Tertiary Institutions Act (UOTIA) section 30 and 31 respectively."

According to the letter, UOTIA does not contain any provision allowing the Chancellor of a public university to appoint any person (s) other than those recommended by the University council.

Julius Taremwa the general secretary of Mbarara University of Science and Technology Academic Staff Association (MUSTASA) in an interview said they are not about to bow down the pressure until sanity is restored in Mbarara University.

"We are even determined to challenge this in courts of law because the chancellor has no right whatsoever to appoint any persons at the university, we cannot allow such maladministration to keep on," Taremwa said
