Wakiso school closed over poor hygiene

The Wakiso district inspector of schools, William Mwaja, has closed one school over poor hygiene. Bright Community Infant School is located at Kayunga in Wakiso town council.
According to Mwanja, the children were being given dirty water for drinking, poor toilet facilities and very dirty corridors with a lot of rubbish and stagnant water.
"I have warned this director over this situation several times but she has refused to put the situation right. The more I leave the school to operate, the more I put the life of the children at stake," said Mwanja.

The boarding section was also messy with children sleeping on triple-deckers in very small rooms.
Mwanja condemned such a situation saying that in case of fire, it becomes difficult to save the lives of the children and their property.
The director of the school, Catherine Nantale, said the school has been in operating for five years with 150 children and about twenty pupils in the boarding section.
Two more schools were found with poor facilities and hygiene and Mwanja warned that they too may be closed any time soon.
These are New life High School and Faruhaan Nursery and Primary School in Bugembegembe in Wakiso town council.
At New Life High School, boys and girls share one building for accommodation while the septic tank was only covered with a wooden plank.
The septic tank is found between the classrooms and the dormitories and Mwanja said such a situation is unacceptable.
Some students were found sleeping in their dormitories at a time when they should be in class.
Only two teachers were found at school and the headteacher, Ahammed Ssengooba, was also not at school.
At Faruhaana toilets were found full and the school had unqualified staff.
The headteacher Dorothy Namulondo attributed the state of the toilets to the landlord who she said keep on promising to dig another one but is yet to deliver on the promise.
