Obua handed new 5-year term as MUST vice chancellor

The vice-chancellor who has had a rocky ride said his second term will also be his last at the institution
Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) vice-chancellor Prof. Celestino Obua has been reappointed for another five-year term.
His reappointment was announced and welcomed during the 77th university council meeting held on Friday.
MUST chancellor Prof. Charles Olweny and university council chairperson Dr Warren Naamara welcomed Obua's reappointment.
The council also applauded the university staff for having ended their recent strike and resumed duty.
According to the document signed by Naamara and council secretary Melchior Byaruhanga, the 77th council directed is chairperson to be its spokesperson for the university council.
The council also directed that staff issues should be discussed with management for information at the next council meeting.
It also directed staff to desist from communicating information that is harmful to the university's name and image.
The council also constituted the 7th council committees which included appointment
board, finance, planning and development, audit and risk management, estates and works and students welfare and disciplinary. They also elected the vice-chairperson of the council.
Obua's reappointment comes at a time when the university staff were demanding that the council to expedites the process of his replacement. He said that his second term will also be his last at the institution.
Obua denies allegations of misconduct and mismanagement raised by the University Joint Staff Association.
He has been accused of financial mismanagement, deteriorating quality of teaching at the university, suffocating operations of the MUST grant office, staff harassment and intimidation, providing wrongful information to the university among others which the staff claimed were failing the progress of the university.
Following the complaints, Keith Muhakanizi the secretary to the treasury in May tasked the Auditor General to conduct a special review into the allegations.
According to a special review report released on 14th June 2019, the audit examination found no evidence to confirm the allegations.
