KAVC Volleyball tournament receives improved sponsorship package

Just nine days to the tip-off of the NSSF KAVC International Volleyball tournament, NSSF have raised their sponsorship from sh130 to sh180 this year.

This was confirmed by NSSF Deputy Managing Director Patrick Ayota during a press briefing where the Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC) president Milly Kure received the dummy cheque at Lugogo on Tuesday.

Kure who urged members of the public to come and support home teams that will compete for the honours hailed NSSF for their continued support.

"We are very pleased with the support NSSF has given for the past 11 years and we look forward to continue moving in the same direction in promoting volleyball in Uganda. The cash prizes should not go to foreign teams only.

Therefore, the public is urged to come and support our local teams," Kure noted.

In this years' event, winners for both men and women categories will bag sh10m, runners up sh5.5m and third place team will move away with sh3.7m.

Part of the sponsorship package will go towards hiring competition venues, purchase of competition and technical equipment and covering running costs.

This is the biggest championship in 23 years. Unlike the previous years, the tournament will run for three days instead of two.

Over 40 teams are expected from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Southsudan, Kenya, and Tanzania and for the first time a team from Ethiopia.

Organizing committee chairperson Hamza Lubwama believes that the level of competition is likely to be high because of the lucrative prizes.

"It will be an action packed three-day event where more foreign teams are expected and some of them have already confi rmed, the prize money has been increased which means more teams will to come to contest this year's event and fans will enjoy it better," said Lubwama.

Ugandan sides KAVC and Ndejje University are defending champions in the men and women categories respectively.

The two local sides eliminated Rwandan rival teams Gisagara and Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) in highly contested finals last year.
