Mihigo, Namakoye shine in Nakuru badminton championship

Uganda's badminton starts Daniel Mihigo and Mable Namakoye were on top of their game over the weekend en-route to winning the Shah Lalji Badminton Championships in Nakuru.

Mihigo beat Kenya's Edwin Akwanyi 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) in the men's singles while Mbabazi registered a similar 2-0 score over fellow Ugandan Mable Namakoye to register their first wins of the season.
 
Mihigo, 23 successfully defended his titles having won the same championship last year.
 
"It wasn't easy as it looks but I was coming from competing in the national trials and the Mihigo Invitational Challenge where I lost to Brian Kasirye in the final, so I was very fit for the event," Mihigo said
 
Mihigo later teamed up with Namakoye to also claim the mixed doubles over Freddie Kirabo and Gladys Mbabazi, winning 2-0.
 
Mihigo/Namakoye had eliminated Sammy Sikoyo/Agnes Joris 2-1 in the semi-finals while Mbabazi/Namakoye had seen off Lavina Martins and Brenda Awori 2-0 to win the women's doubles.
 
In the women singles, Namakoye got a bye in the first round, walked over Kenya's Sheila Jeptoo in the second before she beat Brenda Awori 2-1 (17-21, 21-12, 21-18) in the third and beating Lavina Martins 2-1 in the final.
