“They stood by their wives for about five, eight to 10 years of fistula. These are young men who would have chosen to remarry. They are community champions,” Namakula said.

Seven men have been given medals for supporting their wives who had been suffering from fistula. The men were awarded by Women at Work International (WAWI), a non-governmental organisation that empowers women and children, at an event at Hotel Africana in Kampala yesterday.

Accorded to Halima Namakula, the WAWI executive director, the men were recognized in order to encourage more men to support their women during such hard times.

No man should divorce his wife because of illness because getting ill is natural, according to Namakula.

"We are doing this to motivate other men. Many have divorced their wives over such conditions. The awards were launched by the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga in 2017 and since then such outstanding men have been receiving awards annually," she said.

"They stood with their wives. We are talking about five, eight to 10 years of fistula. These are young men who would have chosen to remarry. They are community champions," she added.

Milton Kambula, the President of Global Peace Foundation Uganda Chapter and Peace Service Ambassador said: "For the world to achieve sustainable peace and economic stability, the family institutions should be the basis and foundation to achieve this peace begins at home."

He saluted Namakula for fighting for the rights of women. He advised couples to demonstrate a culture of dialogue, reconciliation, respect, forgiveness, teamwork, kindness, compassion, true love, integrity and living for the greater good and the sake of others.

Kambula asked fistula survivors and members of WAWI to share their testimonies in the forthcoming UNAA Convention 2019 in Chicago, US so that partners can support Uganda towards the end Fistula campaign
