"This is a great achievement for you. It confirms ownership of the land," Ssekandi said.

Unlike other tenures of ownership, customary ownership in most cases is rarely evidenced by certificates of titles.

"With growing land grabbing it was important for our people to get land certificates which is proof that they are the rightful owners. It also gives peace to the owners," said James Leku, the Adjumani District LCV chairperson.

Customary Land is owned by indigenous communities and administered in accordance with their customs with the Land Act 1998listing individual, family, and common ownership as the types of customary land ownership.
