Uganda had a rough start at the Netball World Cup after succumbing to host England at the M&S Arena in Liverpool.

The opening fixture of Pool D saw the She Cranes lose 64-32.

The hosts made proper use of home advantage to dominate the scoreboard as they beat Uganda 15-6 win in the first quarter and 31-18 at halftime.

Later, the She Cranes tried to get the upper hand after coach Vincent Kiwanuka made quick substitutions.

Joan Nampungu replaced Lillian Ajio in goal defence while Stella Nanfuka took over from Sylvia Nanyonga in wing defence.

However, a few minutes into the third quarter, She Cranes centre player Stella Oyella was sent off for unfair play leaving Uganda with six players on court.

This gave the hosts the advantage to post more goals and extend their lead further to 44-25 in the third quarter which grew into a 32 goal margin at the final whistle.

"It was a tough game and we could have gotten back into the game if only they hadn't sent off our player. We still have two more group stage matches and we need to with both games so as to advance to the next stage," said She Cranes assistant coach Nelson Bogere.

She Cranes captain Peace Proscovia netted goals as Racheal Nanyonga added 12 for Uganda.

Meanwhile, Joanne Harten's 29 and Rachel Dunn's 17 goals steered England to victory.

Uganda is scheduled to play Samoa on Saturday in their second of the three group stage matches.

Both teams need victory in this game having lost their opening matches.

Samoa also lost their first group stage fixture against Scotland 53-35 on Friday at the tournament that has attracted 16 teams competing in four pools.

The best three teams in each group automatically qualify to the next stage at the event scheduled to end on July 21 in Liverpool.
