Handball coaches tipped on nurturing school children

The standard of handball in schools next year is set to improve which could ultimately lead to a competitive season. 

This after the Uganda Handball Federation (UHF) in partnership with the International Handball Federation (IHF) embarked on a month-long schools' coaching workshop in the districts of Mukono, Wakiso and Kampala.

According to the facilitator, Helmut Martin, the course is meant to equip coaches with tactics to handle school players. 

"Coaches tend to give school children tips and drills that are supposed to be done by clubs and that retards the talent growth of the players at school level so we are giving them skills on how to handle them," Martin said. 

He conducted the workshops in Wakiso, Mukono at Uganda Christian University and then Kampala at Police Children School, Kibuli.

UHF treasurer Will Mayanja said that the coaching workshops are one of the capacity building programs set up this year. 

"We asked IHF to give us capacity building workshops and these are going to help us to develop the sport. Now we do not expect these coaches to train students with club level tactics," Mayanja noted.

Martin also took time to conduct training sessions with the National women team that qualified for the All Africa Games due August in Rabat Morocco.
