Rugby Cranes broke a six-year away jinx in the Elgon cup after they defeated Kenya 16-13 in the first leg of the event in Kisumu.

The Ugandan side last beat Kenya way back in 2013 in another highly contested fixture and coach Robert Sseguya equates Saturday's victory to that.

"Just like 2013, I put all my trust in the boys and told them to give in their best and indeed they did it. I'm proud of them," he stated.

"They put their bodies on the line for their nation and we had an important win that will motivate these young boys. We are going back to rectify a few mistakes and wait for the return leg," Sseguya added.

Adrian Kasito gave the Nile Special Sponsored side the lead with a try and Aaron Ofoywroth added a drop goal and a penalty to stretch Uganda lead to 11-0.

Kenya fought back replying from a penalty by Dominic Coulson that reduced the deficit to 11-3 by break time.

On return, Santos Ssenteza added a try for Uganda to stretch the lead to 16-3 but the Kenyans fought back in front of a mammoth home crowd managing two tries which were not enough to stop the Rugby Cranes from celebrating victory.

Fly-half Aaron Ofoywroth who features for Kenyan side Harlequins was voted man-of-the -match for his tireless effort.

His ball kicking skills destabilized the Kenyans who thought of a walk in the park.
