The youth have been urged to embrace innovation and creativity for their businesses to be sustainable.

The call was made by the Deputy Prime Minister, Kirunda Kivejinja during the maiden Youth in Business Symposium on Friday at Innovation Village in Ntinda.

"Ever since I left India in 1957, I have always thought of ways to be a successful man and I believe today I have been able to achieve that. The government has created for you avenues through which you can access credit so it is up to you to succeed or fail," Kivejinja told the participants who comprised youth entrepreneurs.

Kivejinja also urged the youth to embrace partnerships by teaming up with skilled people for better results.

The symposium was graced by various keynote speakers who included former Uganda Tourism Board CEO, Stephen Asiimwe. Asiimwe tipped over 100 youth about the enormous opportunities in the tourism industry.

"Uganda's tourism sector is growing every day and I believe due to the growing power of travel, more people will be interested to stay here hence widening business in tourism. I, therefore, urge all of you here to think of investing in tourism," Asiimwe said.

Keith Kalyegira, the Chief Executive Officer of Capital Markets Authority, talked about how youth or Small and Medium Enterprises can attract partnerships both locally and globally. He advised the youth to always be ready and fully prepared for partnerships if they are to succeed in business.

Under the theme Patient Capital for Youth Innovation and Incubation, the symposium was organized by Innoculous Uganda with support of Vision Group under the Pakasa flagship.

The symposium is in line with the Pakasa objective of promoting youth entrepreneurship as a viable source of livelihood in the face of high levels of unemployment in the country. Pakasa's strategy is to promote entrepreneurship as a viable means of livelihood.

Participants at the symposium got expert tips on the various aspects of starting and operating various businesses in Uganda including highlighting the mistakes, market intelligence/trends and answer frequently asked questions about operating business in Uganda - from sources of capital to sustaining a business.

According to Mary Samantha Nyabalega, a managing partner at Innoculous Ltd, the inaugural edition of the symposium met its objective of encouraging more youth to embrace entrepreneurship as an alternative to formal employment.

Nyabalega noted that the solution to the high levels of youth unemployment is empowering the youth to become job creators through innovation.
