KIU gets nod to offer medicine, surgery courses

KAMPALA - The East African Medical and Dental Council boards have accredited Kampala International University (KIU) to offer courses in medicine and surgery.
This was revealed by Prof. Fred Wabwire-Mangen, the chairperson of KIU University Council, who said the accreditation is for the next 10 years.
He made remarks during the 20th graduation ceremony of the university at the main campus in Kansanga, Kampala on Sunday.
Wabwire-Mangen said the institution is determined to provide quality education and research to maintain KIU at the competitive pedestal both in Uganda and in the region.
His advice to the thousands who graduated was clear: Dream big and achieve your aspirations.
"Please do not have small dreams for yourself because God created you with unlimited abilities of dreaming. I urge you to dream big, be health-conscious and always develop implementation plans to actualize your dreams."

A total of 2,405 students were awarded certificates, diplomas and degrees, of which 58% was the male composition.
Science and technology minister Dr Elioda Tumwesigye, who was the chief guest, hailed the KIU administration for making inroads into Kenya and Tanzania by offering university education.
He implored the university to open branches in neighbouring South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.
The visiting special guest from Nigeria, Dr Pius Olakunle, director general of Technical Aid Corp in the ministry of foreign affairs, told guests that his nation seeks to deepen relations with Uganda in education.
On his part, the chairman board of trustees, Hassan Basajjabalaba, was delighted with the accreditation of medicine and surgery courses, saying it had taken 11 years of engagement with the EA Medical Council and Uganda National Council of Higher Education.
Dr Mouhamad Mpezamihigo, the university's vice-chancellor, hailed President Yoweri Museveni for providing an enabling environment for private universities to thrive and cautioned graduates against corruption.
