Russia Day commemorated in Uganda

The day commemorates the declaration of the sovereignty of Russia following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, paving way for creation of the Russian Federation.

KAMPALA - Diplomats and several other dignitaries joined the Russian Community in Uganda to commemorate Russia Day, which is celebrated annually on June 12 since 1992.

The day commemorates the declaration of the sovereignty of Russia following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, paving way for the creation of the Russian Federation.

 
Russia Day is a national holiday, during which the country traditionally holds holiday concerts, mass open-air celebrations, and sports events.

It also features a ceremony of awarding the state prizes by the country's president to outstanding personalities in such fields as science and technology, literature or humanitarian service.

The celebrations in Uganda were held at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala on Tuesday, drawing envoys, the business community and well-wishers.

The state minister for foreign affairs, Okello Oryem who was the chief guest at the event, said Uganda was keen to strengthen relations with Russia.

Uganda has a long history of relations with Russia, especially in the fields of defence, education, energy, and private sector engagement is increasing.
