Renowned media academic Dr. Monica Chibita has been promoted to full professorship.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Uganda Christian University (UCU) Vice-Chancellor, Dr. John Senyonyi, the University Council, sitting on Thursday approved the promotion of Dr. Chibita to the rank of full professor.

"I congratulate Prof. Chibita for this much deserved achievement," read the statement. "It will be remembered that Prof. Chibita came to UCU in 2012 from Makerere University at the rank of Associate Professor," Dr. Senyonyi said.

"We must note that Prof. Chibita is only the second homegrown full Professor that the University Council has promoted during the institution's 22 years of existence."

Prof. Chibita, the head of the Faculty of Journalism, Media and Communication (FJMC) is also the Board Chairperson of the New Vision Printing and Publishing Company.

When Prof. Chibita joined UCU, she first became Head of the Mass Communications Department, which she worked to grow into the Faculty, Dr. Senyonyi said.

"She has not only shown to be a consummate academic, but very importantly a leader who grows her team. During her time at UCU, she has worked to train five PhDs in a partnership with two institutions in Norway and South Africa," he added.

Dr. Senyonyi also commended Prof. Chibita for presiding over the phenomenal growth of her section at the University while at the same time growing her own academic achievements.

"It is a laudable accomplishment when a Dean holding her heavy administrative duties simultaneously researches and publishes to grow academically," he said.

Dr. Senyonyi added: "We celebrate her achievement with glowing pride. Thank you Prof. Monica Chibita. The LORD bless you."

Responding to her promotion, Prof. Chibita told the New Vision website that it   has placed a higher expectation for her to demonstrate leadership in ensuring the soundness of the curriculum and quality of teaching.

"The promotion places on me a greater duty to model professionalism and to mentor colleagues and students," she said. "Finally, I see this as an opportunity to look back at everything I have been doing on this journey and ask myself, "so what?" What does the Lord require of me now? I believe our God is purposeful, and these kinds of things do not happen for nothing. It will be a while before I can answer the "so what" question satisfactorily, but the answer will determine what I do (or stop doing) from now on."

By Press time, messages congratulating her upon her new achievement were flowing on the different social media platforms. In one of the messages, New Vision's Editor in Chief, Barbara Kaija wished Prof. Chibita blessings and favours.
