UBTEB registers good start of nationwide exams

A total of 6,077 candidates sat for the first exams, to attain Technical National Diplomas, Higher Diplomas or Vocational Diplomas.

The Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) exams have started off smoothly.
According to Onesmus Oyesigye, the Board's executive director, delivery of exams to various examination centres was successful and exams commenced on time.
Oyesigye said the Board had not witnessed any form of irregularities so far.
"I commend the heads of centres together with UBTEB exam managers for observing the guidelines and rules on conduct of competence based exams," he said.
A total of 6,077 candidates sat for the first exams, to attain Technical National Diplomas, Higher Diplomas or Vocational Diplomas.
The exams, to be conducted in a space of two weeks, will see a total of 24,161 examined across various disciplines.
The students will sit for diploma and certificate courses including civil, mechanical, building and civil engineering; fisheries, meteorology, agriculture, wild life, lands and survey.
The first phase of the exams started with briefing for candidates for technical diploma and higher diploma programmes on Friday.
Launched in 2011, the programme is an ambitious plan to create a pool of at least one million Ugandans with skills and competencies relevant in the labour market by the year 2020.
Statistics indicate a gradual increase in enrolment for vocational and training programmes with primary school leavers turning to technical courses in the face of rising youth unemployment.
Student enrollment has been rising for courses including welding and metal fabrication, electrical installation, motor vehicle mechanics, block laying, plumbing and fitting, carpentry and joinery.
